Students “Cook up a Business” for Global Entrepreneurship Week 2016

On Wednesday 16th November, we hosted our second ‘Mitrovica Master Chef – Cooking Up a Business’ competition. The fun and energetic event was held as part of Global Entrepreneurship Week 2016, an international initiative designed to encourage entrepreneurial skill through new, entertaining and exciting activities.

The students, in teams of four, had a strict time limit of two hours to prepare and present their food to a panel of judges. The teams competed for points in organisational, presentation and creative skill; team management, and of course, the final product.

There was stiff competition in the kitchen on the day. Great dishes were served up by all teams, and after some close scoring by the judges, who run successful businesses in both Mitrovica and Prishtina, it was the group who cooked chicken, breaded hot dog and Caesar salad that was declared the winner.

Practical learning experience is central to IBCM’s learning model, and so the MasterChef cooking competition is designed to encourage an entrepreneurial mind-set through hands-on participation. Albana Kelmendi explained how the event complimented her course at IBCM: “We had to work with limited time and money, two important factors in any business. It was a really fun way to have our skills in managing both these things tested.” Uglesa Petrovic added “My group learned how to delegate; each member was responsible for one part of the dish. It was a really good way to work together.”

Charlene Miller, Director of IBCM said “We are proud to celebrate entrepreneurial spirit during Global Entrepreneurship Week. Through the Mitrovica Master Chef competition. I would like to thank all the students for their open-minded and enthusiastic participation in today’s event, as well as the judges for lending their expert opinions to the competition, and finally our hardworking staff who made this competition possible.”
